We are now shipping Adobe™ Acrobat™ Exchange LE 2.0.1 on the Developer CD, instead of Acrobat™ Reader.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
In addition to the regular features of Reader (open, copy, use bookmarks and hyperlinks, custom zoom), you can take advantage of the full text search and retrieval capability.
We recommend that you upgrade to Exchange LE because it also has plug-in support so you will be able to make use of plug-ins that extend the functionality of LE.
SEARCHING
To search for something on the Developer CD, first install Exchange LE.
1. Then select Indexes from the Tools menu (command-shift-X). Click on the
Add... button and navigate to the "Acrobat Indexes" folder (on the top level
of the Developer CD). Select the file that ends in ".PDX" -- this will add the
index to your list of indexes to search.
2. Once you have selected the index, you can then create a query in the Search
window with the Query command, or the Search Query button in the toolbar.
Acrobat Search supports complex queries that can include phrases, Booleans,
and wildcards. You can limit the search to specific indexed documents, and
you can select options such as word-stemming, case sensitivity, and proximity.
3. The results of your search are shown as a list of documents in the Search
Results window, ranked by relevance. You can select any of the files and
double-click on it, and then use the Search Next and Search Previous buttons
in the toolbar to look at successive occurrences of the search term.
See the "Help-ExchangeLE.pdf" for more details on Acrobat Search.
A FEW TIPS AND TRICKS
There is an online help file available for the novice Acrobat user -- just select "Acrobat Exchange LE Help" under the help menu.
In the meantime, we have discovered a few tips and tricks to help you use Acrobat.
• Launch any Acrobat file by double-clicking on it. By default it opens at 100%,
but you can change the magnification in various ways. You can use the
Preferences command in the File menu to change the default magnification
(as well as other settings) that a document uses when first opened .
NOTE 1: Some documents may not display well at 125%; some characters
may be distorted. Viewing at another magnification, such as100% or
120%, is preferable. (You can even specify a custom size, such as 137%).
NOTE 2: Screen-shot graphics may not display well at 100% (although they
will print correctly). Viewing at a higher magnification (such as 200%) should
solve the problem.
• Most documents have bookmarks that aid navigation. The bookmark list functions
as a hypertext table of contents. To display or hide the bookmark list, use the
leftmost two buttons in the toolbar across the top of the screen.
• Some documents have hyperlinks within their tables of contents, indexes,
and in cross-references throughout their body text. The presence of a hyperlink
is indicated by the cursor changing shape to a hand with extended
index finger. Click once on the hyperlink to jump to its destination.
ACROBAT REVISION HISTORY
7/21/95--release 3 of Exchange LE 2.0.1 fixes a bug found in ATM where ATM did not load when 68k-CFM enabler was running. Acrobat cannot run without ATM, so would quit.
OTHER NOTES
7/21/95--In the Index pages of the Inside Macintosh volumes clicking on a hyperlink opens the correct file, but not to the correct page. We hope to have this bug fixed in time for the next Reference Library.
7/22/95--If you have trouble installing this version on your Power Macintosh computer, try turning off the modern memory manager, any non-essential INITs, and/or any virus protection software.
10/24/95--We fixed the problem with Inside Macintosh Index pages (where hyperlinks would not go to correct page).
1/15/96--We have provided the QuickDraw GX and non-GX fonts as additional packages for those who find they turn GX on and off frequently. See the "!Turning QD GX On & Off" file for instructions on how to use these fonts.
1/24/96--We have added another plug-in from Adobe to the Disk 4: Plug-Ins folder. This plug-in is called AdjustWindow and is shipped in an as-is condition. AdjustWindow resizes the Acrobat document window to the size of the document, rather than the size of the monitor. (Yes!)
